CALGARY – A former “Dancing With Wolves” actor will be charged with sexually assaulting girls as young as 13 and marrying teenage girls as young as 15.
Nathan Lee Chasing Horse, also known as Nathan Chasing His Horse, born on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, was arrested near Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Las Vegas police allege the sexual assaults spanned two decades and took place in the United States and Canada.
Calgary police and police from the neighboring Tsuut’ina nation say they are cooperating with authorities in Las Vegas and believe Chasing Horse may have had victims there in Alberta.
The two police services point out that in Canada there is no statute of limitations for investigating or laying charges in sexual assault cases.
Tsuut’ina Nation Police said they are looking into all unsolved sexual assault cases and are “working with a Crown prosecutor to ensure all victims have a voice.”
Chasing Horse is known for his role as the young Sioux warrior Smiles a Lot in He Dances with Wolves, directed by and starring Kevin Costner. The film won seven Oscars in 1991, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Chasing Horse is due in court in North Las Vegas on Thursday.
The arrest of 46-year-old Mr. Chasing Horse follows a months-long investigation that began after Las Vegas Metropolitan Police received a tip in October 2022.
Court documents show he will be charged with at least two counts of sex trafficking and one count each of sexual assault on a girl under 16, child abuse or neglect of a child and sexual assault.
The Associated Press obtained a search warrant in Las Vegas that Chasing Horse shared a home with his five wives and was the leader of a cult known as “The Circle.”
According to the news agency, Las Vegas police noted in the document that they had identified at least six alleged victims and traced sexual allegations against Chasing Horse back to the early 2000s in several US states.
According to the search warrant, he was arrested in 2015 from the reservation at Fort Peck, Montana, after allegations of human trafficking.
“Nathan Chasing Horse has used their spiritual traditions and belief system as a tool to sexually assault young women on multiple occasions,” the AP wrote, citing investigators who completed the warrant.
